Through the teeth and over the gums, look out tummy , here it comes!!! LUNCH with SOUPY!! was what I had every day when I was a kid. He had a lot of fun being silly and making jokes with us kids thathad double meanings to entertain the adults as well.. I think Pee Wee Herman got a lot of ideas for his playhouse from Soupy.

I sure hope he had a good time being alive. He seemed to.

I had no idea things were so bad here…I am so bummed.

Douglass Houghton of Michigan

It’s along time since he lived, but he did and it changed Michigan forever. Way back 164 years ago a man died…

Douglass Houghton, at the age of just 36, drowned in Lake Superior during a storm on Oct. 13, 1845. He was working on a geological survey at the time. His “re-discovery” of Copper caused a mining boom in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. His work changed the life of the Native people in irreparable ways. He was last seen near the mouth of the Eagle River. His body was found seven months later and buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit. He was survived by a wife and four children.

He was a Medical Doctor, the Mayor of Detroit, First President of the Detroit Board of Education, a Geologist, and a Professor at University of Michigan where he turned down the School’s Presidency.

That man was a force in early Detroit, as were many others, but not all so “famous” as he.

“Over the last decade, development in Charleston’s Upper Peninsula has boomed. In 2004 the city, the Historic Charlestown Foundation, and the State Historic Preservation Office undertook an extensive survey of historic architectural resources in the area with an eye towards protecting them from demolition, inappropriate alterations, and insensitive new construction as the area evolves. Community meetings were held to get input, discuss local history with residents, and build community pride in Upper Peninsula resources.”

If only someone had thought to do that in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula!! Instead we have ticky tacky vinyl over even worse looking ashphalt siding over god knows what!! Some arts of the U.P. look like Appalachia 1947. And large parts of it look worse. Have you ever been to Laurium? never mind…

I love historically perseved houses and buildings. seems no one takes the time to build as an “Art” anymore. What a shame to lose the efforts of those who cared in the past.

Emerald ash borer now in Alger County

Alger is now on list of Upper Peninsula Counties where the emerald ash borer has been found, along with Mackinac, Chippewa, Schoolcraft, Delta and Houghton Counties The State found an adult bug in a trap in Munising, and 11 adult of them were found in a trap near Brimley in Chippewa County. They were collected over the summer as part of a national survey. They kill trees by the miullions, I suppose this means horrendous chemicals will be sprayed by air…!?? OMG, I moved here for the clean environment.

Baraga County Memorial Hospital gets $28.3 million!!

Just when we thought the U.P. was fading into the dust of history, HUD will insure a $28,310,000 loan to Baraga County Hospital ti build a new facility.The new hospital will be about 3 miles fromthe current location, it will be a one-story, 15 bed hospital with a drug store onsite, and an out-patient center. The new hospital site is 40 acres on the NW corner of US-41 and Maki Road.

One more reason to consider a move to the area…!

From the FOX STATION in Marquette: Two Schoolcraft County residents are jailed after detectives with the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team caught them drying marijuana…..
The pair had two tents filled with 384 marijuana stocks….

WHAT!??? Marijuana Stocks? I think they mean Stalks. Whatever happened to getting an EDUCATION before getting a job with a News Station?? lol… It is so, so sad.

They were taken into custody when they arrived in the area to work the harvest.

No use hunting Deer in the U.P. this year.

Seriously, we have had a couple of really tough winters, if you are a deer, They just aren’t here in as many numbers as some years past. You will have a better chance getting that Meat if you stay below the bridge and even below Gaylord I’d say. I hear the Southern half of the Lower Peninsula is over run, so stay home this season and hunt from your back porch, eh?
